Capitals Morning Skate News Roundup: Tom Wilson Returns

The Washington Capitals held a morning skate prior to their game on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center. Puck drop is at 8 PM and can be seen on NBC Sports Washington. Here are all of the news from the Capitals’ morning skate. 

Forward Tom Wilson will make his season debut after his 20-game suspension was reduced to 14 by a neutral arbitrator on Tuesday morning. Wilson was suspended for an illegal check to the head on St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist in the team’s final preseason game on September 30. He will skate on the top line with forwards Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov tonight. Forward Dmitrij Jaskin will come out of the lineup in favor of Wilson, 24.

Goaltender Pheonix Copley will start against the Wild, meaning Braden Holtby will likely start tomorrow night at the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Centre. Copley, 26, is 2-1-1 with a save percentage of .898 and a goals-against average of 3.14 this season. He made 31 saves in his last start, a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on November 5.

Capitals Lines at Wild


-Ovechkin has nine goals in his past four games at Xcel Energy Center; his 1.07 goals per game against Minnesota is his highest goals per game average against any individual franchise

-Kuznetsov enters Tuesday’s game against the Wild one assist shy of 200 in his career

-The Capitals have won seven consecutive games against the Wild

-Center Nicklas Backstrom has 18 points (16 assists) in 14 career games and 11 assists in his last seven games against the Wild; he’s riding a five-game point streak (two goals, six points), one game shy of the Capitals’ longest streak this season, set by Kuznetsov​ (six games, one goal, seven points)

-Defenseman John Carlson‘s 25:59 time on ice per game average ranks fourth in the NHL; Carlson’s 18 points (five goals) rank fourth in the NHL among defensemen; has been on the ice for 16 goals at five-on-five this season, which leads the Capitals

-The Capitals have scored an NHL-best 26 goals in the second period this season
