Thursday, October 25 was Tim Barne’s (aka Vic Ferrari) day with the Stanley Cup in Calgary, Alberta. Barnes is the Director of Hockey Analytics for the Capitals. (Reminder, you can find links to each and every “day with the Stanley Cup” that have already occurred right here.)
Tim Barnes is an engineer by trade, who graduated from the University in Calgary in 1989. Prior to joining the Capitals, he worked in the oil & gas, petrochemical, and rotating equipment industries on both the engineering and commercial aspects, and in the finance industry in securities trading.

In addition, Barnes was one of hockey’s early analytics bloggers and founder of the timeonice.com hockey analytics data resource. He also created the hocky blog “Irreverent Oilers Fans”. Both online sites went dormant in 2014 when Barnes began advising NHL teams. He is currently the Director of Hockey Analytics for the Washington Capitals.
The idea for quantifying puck possession through shot attempts originally came from Barnes, who posted his work online under the screen name “Vic Ferrari”. (Taken from the late Andy Kaufman, whose alternate personality was called Vic Ferrari).

Barnes coined the possession term “Corsi,” naming the stat after Buffalo Sabres goaltending coach Jim Corsi. More on Barnes/Ferrari here.
In true “Vic Ferrari” fashion, not much is known about the events he held on his day with the Stanley Cup. Here’s what we could find.
