Hershey Bears Down Lehigh Valley Phantoms 3-1; Vitek Vanecek Continues Strong Play; Riley Barber Scores Again

The Hershey Bears beat the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 3-1 Sunday evening at the Giant Center in Hershey. The win raised the Bears record to 4-6-0-1. After starting the season with five straight losses, the Bears have gone 4-1-1 in their last six games. The Bears return to action Friday when they face the Americans in Rochester. Puck drop is 7:05 PM. 

Michael Sgarbossa, Liam O’Brien and Riley Barber all registered tallies for the hometown Bears. Vitek Vanecek continued his strong play stopping 34 of 35 shots.

STARTERS
Vitek Vanecek (2-3-1, 2.64 GAA, .907 sv%) started between the pipes for the Bears. Alex Lyon (1-0-0, 3.01 GAA, .933 sv%) got the start in goal for the Phantoms. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Bears:

FIRST PERIOD
The Bears struck quickly in this one. Mike Sgarbossa deflected a shot from the point by Aaron Ness for the first score at 1:17 of the opening frame. Aaron Ness (4) and Connor Hobbs (5) we’re credited with the assists. The assist was Ness’ 200th career AHL point.

The period would end with the Bears holding a 1-0 lead. The Phantoms outshot the Bears 10-9 for the first 20 minutes. There were no penalties called.

SECOND PERIOD
The Bears would push the lead to 2-0 with a goal from Liam O’Brien at 1:51 of the middle frame. This was O’Briens sixth goal of the season. Jonas Siegenthaler (2) and Colby Williams (3) were credited with the helpers.

The Phantoms would finally get on the scoreboard with a goal from Connor Bunnaman at 10:16 of the middle frame.

The period would end with the Bears leading 2-0. Shots on goal for the second period were 13-13. The Phantoms were 0 for 2 and the Bears 0 for 1 on the power play.

THIRD PERIOD
Riley Barber was awarded a penalty shot early in the final frame, and he would convert, making it 3-1 Hershey at 3:36 of the final frame. Barber was hooked on a breakaway, setting up the penalty shot.

The Bears would it out, holding on for the 3-1 win.

SHAVINGS

  • After starting the season 0-5-0, the Bears have gone 4-1-1 in the last six games.
  • After scoring no goals in the first nine games, Riley Barber has two goals in as many games.
