Monday night in Vancouver, Capitals’ centerman Nicklas Backstrom became the 27th player in NHL history to reach the 600 assist mark in fewer than 850 games (823 for Backstrom).

Backstrom is the second-fastest Swedish born player to reach the mark (Peter Forsberg: 670 games). In addition, Backstrom became the first player from the 2006 NHL Draft to reach the 600-assist milestone. Since entering the League in 2007-08, Backstrom leads all active players in that category.

Backstrom has set up 52 different teammates on the road to 600 career assists, including 234 helpers on goals by Alex Ovechkin (39%). He has only set up two other players at least 40 times: T.J. Oshie (48) and Alexander Semin (40), per NHL Stats.

With his 601st assist, Nicklas Backstrom has passed Henrik Sedin (600) for the most assists since 2007-08, Backstrom’s first season in the NHL.

As fate would have it, Backstrom registered his 600th assist in the same arena he was drafted in, back in 2006.
