After turning in a solid effort in their convincing 5-2 win over the Canucks in Vancouver Monday night, the Capitals had a much-deserved day-off on Tuesday. What better place to spend their down time than doing a little team building in beautiful Whistler, B.C., located about a 90-minute drive north of Vancouver. And what better activity to do than team axe-throwing?
Yep, the boys made a stop at ForgedAxe in Whistler, for a bit of fun and games and an axe-wielding competition. The boys donned red, green or blue-colored flannel shirts for the visit.
Several of the Capitals players posted videos from the team-building event on their personal Instagram accounts. Here’s a little of what they decided to share.
First up, the Captain dangles his axe-wielding skills, documented by top-line mate Tom Wilson. Ovechkin would first dedicate the toss, “alright babes, this is for you”.

Nicklas Backstrom, the NHL’s newest member of the “600 Club” and fellow Swede Andre Burakovsky seemed a bit uncertain at first, but looked to be getting a hang of things. Andre posted a video of the tossing tandem. It turns out Backstrom is probably better off keeping his day job.
Capitals defenseman Christian Djoos was deadly accurate. Here John Carlson documents the hatchet-hucking skills of his fellow defenseman.

T.J. Oshie looked fairly comfortable tossing an axe, and claimed that he was “better at trick shots”, tossing and landing a few underhanded.

In the end, Oshie would win the axe-throwing competition, and from the looks of the celebration, the win will go a long way in the locker room for days and weeks to come.

The team also stopped by Coast Mountain Brewing in Whistler to wrap-up the day. Thanks to the folks at the brewery for snapping this awesome photo of the Flannel-clad champions!
The Capitals return to game action on Thursday when they visit Connor McDavid and the Oilers in Edmonton.
