Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik has never been known for his offensive abilities in his career (as evidenced by his 17 career goals in nearly 1,000 games. However, during the Capitals’ Thursday night matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Orpik scored his first regular season goal in over two years.

Orpik’s 17th career goal was his first in 182 regular season games (he scored a goal during the Caps’ Stanley Cup run this past summer), since February 26, 2016 in a game against the Minnesota Wild. The goal was also his first-ever against his former team (he spent 13 seasons in Pittsburgh prior to signing with the Capitals in 2014).

Orpik was traded to the Colorado Avalanche at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, as part of the Philipp Grubauer trade, and re-signed on a one-year deal after being bought out by the Avalanche. Orpik recorded one assist in the Capitals’ Opening Night win against the Boston Bruins.
