After getting cut in the Washington Capitalstraining camp, forwards Shane Gersich and Axel Jonnson Fjallby scored in their American Hockey League debuts in the Hershey Bears6-2 loss to the Wilkes-Barry/Scranton Penguins in the team’s preseason opener on Sunday.

Gersich went to the front of the cage after a fellow teammate dangled past several Penguin back checkers on the way to the net and set him up with nothing but net in front of him.

Jonnson-Fjallby fought off a Penguins’ checker and powered his way to the high-danger area, where he ripped one top shelf.

Jonnson-Fjallby, 20, came over to North America for the first time this past September after tallying seven goals and nine assists in 42 games played in the Swedish Hockey League in 2017-18. He played in one preseason game with the Capitals but was held off of the scoresheet.

Gersich, 21, was signed to an entry-level contract by the Capitals on March 23 after he recorded 29 points (13 goals) in 40 games with the University of North Dakota. He was the second-highest goal scorer on the team last season. He tallied one assist in three regular-season games with the Capitals and also played in two postseason games last year. Gersich also recorded a goal in four preseason appearances with the Capitals this month.
