After a day in Lake Zurich, Ilinois, with Capitals director of player development, Steve Richmond, the Stanley Cup headed “Back to Ohio” on Wednesday for a day with John Walton and former Capitals goaltending coach Mitch Korn. (Reminder, you can find the latest schedule of dates for Capitals players “day with the Stanley Cup” right here. You can find links to each and every “day with the Stanley Cup” that has already occurred right here.)

Goggin Ice Center, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio
John Walton and Mitch Korn held a public event at the Goggin Ice Center on the campus of Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, from noon to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. No surprise, but lines formed early for the opportunity to meet the Stanley Cup Champions, and view the Stanley Cup.

Korn, an Oxford native, was Miami’s goaltending coach from 1981-88, served as the Washington Capitals’ director of goaltending during their 2017-18 championship run. Mitch Korn’s Goalie School, is regarded as one of the top goaltending camps in the world.  While serving as goaltending coach with the Buffalo Sabres in the 90s, he turned Dominik Hasek into a four-time Vezina Trophy winner for the league’s top goaltender, with a pair of Hart Trophies (NHL MVP) to boot. He also helped Braden Holtby capture a Vezina Trophy shortly in his second year as goaltender coach for the Washington Capitals.

John Walton, another child of Oxford, who covered the Capitals’ title run, has been the voice of the Washington Capitals since 2013. He was the public address announcer for the Cincinnati Reds from 1996 to 2002 and was also the first play-by-play voice of the AHL’s Cincinnati Mighty Ducks from 1997 to 2000. Walton also the Senior Manager of Communications for Washington’s American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey, the Bears, and called three Calder Cup championship seasons for the Bears in 2006, 2009 and 2010.

Fans lined up for a photo with the prestigious mug. Even fans of teams that fell victim to the champs along their way to winning the Cup. The woman below took her daughters out of school today to see the Stanley Cup. She said it was “more important.” (Per @dmaetzmedia).

Miami University student Jon Cameron may have been the most prepared for his visit to see the Stanley Cup. He drafted a formal letter of absence to administrators at the University, and had John Walton and Mitch Korn sign the letter, excusing his absence.

The expression on the boys face at the end of the following video says it all:

A ceremony honoring the championship duo also took place at Goggin, which included the unfurling of a new banner in Mitch Korn’s honor.

John Walton’s special day was shared with his father, who was a professor of Marketing at the Farmer school at Miami University.
