The Stanley Cup made its final stop in Russia for the summer with a visit to Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov in in his hometown of Novokuznetsk. Orlov’s hometown is located in south-western Siberia, and has a population of 550,000. (Reminder, you can find the latest schedule of dates for Capitals players “day with the Stanley Cup” right here.)
The Stanley Cup’s arrival at the main square in Novokuznetsk was delayed by more than six hours, but that didn’t stop many fans from lining up a full eight hours ahead of time.
Friday morning the Stanley Cup did not fly directly to Novokuznetsk, as planned, causing the delay. According to the deputy head of the city on social issues Grigory Verzhitsky, the trophy was mistakenly sent to Novosibirsk.

The delay allowed for a huge crowd to gather for the event, which saw lines run out of the main square and wrap around the block.

Because of the delayed arrival, the Stanley Cup was actually flown-in on a helicopter.
Dmitry and the Stanley Cup finally arrived and took to the stage at around 7:00 pm local time.
Public Event, Main Square, Novokuznetsk, Russia
Orlov played in the KHL for Novokuznetsk Metallurg from 2007-2011, before jumping the pond and joining the Capitals organization in Hershey. His day with the Cup celebration also coincided with the 400th anniversary celebration of the City of Novokuznetsk, which was also being held in the main square.

Private Party, Novokuznetsk, Russia
Following the public event, Orlov held a more formal gathering in the evening for friends and family. We may have to give Dmitry the “Best Entrance” award for best entrance with the Stanley Cup by a Capitals player this summer. Orlov’s was complete with pyrotechnics and flame throwers! Comin’ in hot!
