The Hockey World Reacts To Tom Wilson’s Big Payday

Tom Wilson can polarize the hockey world in the middle of July. A majority of Caps fans rejoiced when the news broke Friday night that Tom Wilson had been re-signed for another six seasons, at $5.17 million AAV. However, most of the folks on Twitter (outside of Washington) thought the deal was, uh, a bit much.

First, a few words from the man himself:

And a few words from the faithful:

Outside of Caps Nation, the reaction was less than positive. Here are just a few of the (over)reactions on Twitter Friday night following the announcement of Wilson’s new deal.

All we can say is, haters gonna hate, winners gonna celebrate.

We will have much more on the Wilson re-signing and breakdown his contract in the coming days. But for now, Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan’s job is done for this summer, as all free agents are now re-signed with the team.

Completely agree with all the negative. Wilson was worth the 3.5-4.5mil range that most said before his actual numbers dropped. I wouldnt have given him more then 4mil per for a physical presence intangibles player. So even if you think Tom can grow they overpaid for what hes proven he is somewhere in the 1mil per year range

Tom Wilson is re-signed and I like it

    He makes a fortune now
    I think well-deserved
Caps would not have won the Cup without bruising hits from Wilson

Remember what we complained about last two years / series vs. Pittsburgh?
Caps were getting physically mugged, especially the goalie
Cheap Shots for everyone against the Caps, and they lost

Then it’s 2018 and the Caps are mugged no longer
Wilson put no less than three opposing bullies in the hospital – and that’s just the playoffs
Wilson gave the Caps “mean pills” that they didn’t have before

So let’s give the man a chance to live up to his $5 mil a year
Marcus Johannson got $4.53M per year for the Caps and I thought he was a disappointment

Gary Buttman & Co. have struggled royally to remove all vestiges of Honor from the NHL
Wilson has restored it. Deserves his dollars

  3. Eric Lord says:

Wilson is being paid like a scorer. That puts pressure on him to produce more offensively. The Caps value his toughness & penalty killing, but most teams don’t pay $5.17 million a season for those intangibles. 35 points doesn’t cut it for a player who makes $5.17 million a season. Now, Wilson can produce more offensively. If he continues to play with Ovechkin & Kuznetsov, he will certainly have the chance to increase his point total, but that also means that he has to avoid suspensions. The Caps have put faith in Wilson that he will continue to grow offensively & that he has learned from his mistakes & won’t get suspended. It is up to Wilson to reward that faith
