T.J. Oshie’s Day With The Stanley Cup: Warroad and St. Paul, Minnesota

The Stanley Cup continued its adventurous week in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” on Tuesday, spending the day with T.J. Oshie in Warroad and St. Paul, Minnesota. On Saturday, Capitals GM Brian MacLellelan had his day in Minneapolis. Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen had his day on Sunday in Virginia, Minnesota. Yesterday, the Cup was in the tiny town of Bird Island, Minnesota, for Capitals’ Head Trainer Jason Serbus’ day with the Cup. (You can find the latest updated list of dates for Capitals players day with the Stanley Cup right here.)

T.J. And his family flew from Eden Prarie to Warroad early Tuesday morning for an opening event at the Warroad Gardens and Olympic Arenas. Before departing, T.J. And his father connected with the Stanley Cup on the tarmac at the airport.

Upon arrival, the Oshie family was driven from the Warroad International Memorial Airport to the Warroad Gardens and Olympic Arenas in Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidential car from 1933.

Prior to the start of the public event, Warroad mayor Bob Marvin proclaimed July 24, 2018 as T.J. Oshie Day.

The event commenced a little after 9:00 a.m., with highlights of Oshie’s playing days in Warroad, as well a demonstration from a local Native American tribe.

Oshie also took time to take a photo with the youth teams located in Warroad.

T.J. even took time to pose with a few old acquaintances. T.J. And USA Hockey Olympian Gigi Marvin were crowned the 2005 Warroad Frosty Festival King and Queen. They reunited for a photo with the Stanley Cup and Gigi’s gold medal in front of the famous Warroad water tower.

And last but not least, T.J. even took time to participate in his patented drinking technique (known as “the Hollow Man”) with two players from Warroad’s women’s hockey team. It turns out water is more challenging to chug than beer.

The scene then shifted to nearby Lake of Woods for a family photo or two.

T.J. and his entourage then made a couple of stops at local Warroad watering holes, including Main Street Bar and Grill and Izzy’s Lounge and Grill for a few refreshments out of the big mug. This will never get old.

While at Izzy’s, T.J. and his father (Tim) took a photo in front of a sign from back in the day when Tim Oshie used to sing karaoke at Izzy’s.

The Oshie entourage then returned to the Warroad Airport for a quick flight to St. Paul, Minnesota, for another celebration event, this time at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Oshie was welcomed to St. Paul by another large crowd.

In an interview with Jessi Pierce, Oshie reminded every kid today that playing hockey should always be fun. “You hear so many parents and coaches and everyone talking about hockey, playing 12 months a year, and [kids are] getting burnt out. My age group it never worked like that for us. We played football, then we played hockey, then we played golf and then in the summer you fished or did whatever. So, I just try tell them that it should always be fun, and if it’s not fun anymore maybe try go on to something else. I got so much out of the game of hockey, and I’ve always approached it as a game and having fun with it, win or lose, and I still do it today in the NHL locker room. Every day I come in, whether we lost the last game or lost five in a row, it really doesn’t matter. The next day is a new day to have fun out there on the ice. Sometimes the coaches don’t always like it, but that’s just kind of my mentality, and it’s worked for me so far.”

After the event, it was back to the house for some quick nourishment. Cap’n Crunch, of course.

A Night with the Cup
Oshie’s day ended with a more formal party at Lake and Legends Brewing Company in Minneapolis, themed “A night with the Cup”.

The Capitals Shane Gersich and Travis Boyd were also in attendance, and got to drink from the big mug.

From time to time, we get to create some really special sculptures, for really special people, for really special occasions. @tjoshie7 has been a pro hockey player I’ve followed for a long time and getting to celebrate his day with the @stanleycup was nothing more that incredible. Along with his wife @lauren.oshie, they put together an all-time party. We put together a Stanley Cup shot luge along with his party logo under it, as the base. This piece was so fun and challenging to do. We started with a 5” cutout of the Cup, then added 1.5” curved pieces to the front, to give the illusion of a fully 3D Stanley Cup, but without all the weight on the front. Think it turned out amazing, and TJ really liked it too! Thank you to @lakesandlegends, @funkski and the staff for the help and the beautiful venue. Also, thanks to @lindsaypiramcreative for giving us the opportunity to carve this fun piece. Thanks to @gretchenameliaberry for your pictures and help during the setup process and tear down last night. #thinkoutsidetheblocks #thecoldstandard #metroice #stanleycup #ofthenorth #lakesandlegends
