Alex Ovechkin’s “Ovi Cup” Hockey Tournament Was Launched This Weekend

This weekend gave new meaning to the term Ovi Cup.  Starting on Friday July 19, the Ovi Cup youth hockey tournament was launched.  The tournament took place in Odintsovo, a city in the Odintsovsky District in Moscow Oblast, Russia, and involved six youth teams: Atlant (Mytishchi), Khimik (Voskresensk), Kristall (Elektrostal), Olimpiets (Balashikha), Armada (Odintsovo ) and “Wedge”.

The plan was for Alex Ovechkin himself to award the trophy to the winning team on July 21.  The organizers are hoping that more teams will participate in this tournament next year.

The tournament took place in the Odintsovo Ice Palace.  Ovechkin’s parents were on hand for the ceremonial opening faceoff.

Ovechkin’s mother, Tatyana, talked to the hockey parents in attendance, sharing her part in her son’s success.  In answer to the expected question of “How is basketball related to hockey?”, it is very connected. After your own victories, you go to the victories of your children, when the son-Alexander Ovechkin is today recognized as the best.

She continued to say that it turns out that the task of parents to become a part of this process, to teach the child to live with the idea of the goal, to improve every minute and whenever possible, as Sasha had access to the stick and puck everywhere (at the dacha, in front of the TV, at the entrance) to play mentally combinations. And to what tricks only Sasha’s parents did not resort, just to ensure a system contact with hockey! These tips proved invaluable.

Attached is a video of the final tournament game.
