It’s been more than a week now since the Washington Capitals held their celebratory Stanley Cup Championship Parade. You’d imagine after all the elapsed time since the team initially won their first Stanley Cup that the hype would begin to die down and the dust begin to settle, right? Wrong.
Many players have returned to their homelands for the summer, but the party continues for the fans, as we continue to digest the Stanley Cup glory. And that’s where you all come in! You’ve not been shy about showing off your Caps pride all season, and the off-season is no different!
Let’s take a look at what’s shown up in the NoVa Caps mailbag this week.
We start off this week with a simple, yet beautiful shot. The wee hours of the morning in the heart of DC are truly beautiful times, indeed. Here we see the earliest crowd of fans arriving to get a good view for the parade festivities, hours before the fun began. June 12th was a historic day for Washington, and I was happy to be a part of it. But I didn’t show up to all the excitement until hours after this photo was taken. Calm and collected, it’s clear these fans may not yet be fully awake, but they know what’s coming. The hype may not be able to be seen in this photo, but you can feel it flowing in each and every one of these groggy Caps fans!

Fast forward just a few hours from our first photo and we see the fun has begun in Washington! Here we see an awesome shot of T.J. Oshie holding one of his daughters and waving to the crowd as Alex Chaisson and Jakub Vrana look on. Chandler Stephenson can also be seen in the background. His little girl may not fully understand what’s going on, but the smile on Oshie’s face says it all. As I made my own way up and down Constitution Ave that day, I had to question whether or not reality had sunk in for the players yet. Think about it, you work towards a goal for literally the entire duration of your life, and then you achieve it. Millions of people are screaming your name as the streets flood with adoring fans. If you ask me, I don’t think anyone one that bus has really processed what it all means just yet. Nonetheless, this is still a beautiful shot!

Now, I’ve heard of “winged eyeliner”, but this is ridiculous!

Something I don’t think we see half enough of in Capitals fandom is face painting. This is an example of doing it right! I’ve seen a few fans with shaved heads painting their entire heads bright red, and that’s doing it right too! There is no wrong way to express your love for the team, but my god do I want to see more of it! That’s your assignment this week, viewers! If you have a photo of your face painted for the Capitals, send it to us by Saturday July 7th and have it featured in the next installment of NoVa CAPtures!

Now, if this isn’t the most wholesome thing in the world, I don’t know what it is. As if the Caps winning the Stanley Cup wasn’t awesome enough, one fan took the parade as an outlet to let the world know that there is a new little Caps fan on the way! I also picked up one of those pennants while I was in DC, it’s hanging up in my mancave as we speak, I love the concept of hanging the onesie off of the stick the same way the pennant hangs on it. That’s a stroke of genius in my opinion. This submission came from the mother-to-be’s brother-in-law, which means that soon one uncle with have a niece or nephew to take to Caps games! Next season isn’t too early, is it?

I do love a good meme. And this a good meme. So, I love this. I’ve seen this template of Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un used an inordinate amount of times to talk express an inordinate amount of concepts, from politics, to video games, to hot button issues that would send Tumblr users into a frenzy. But to use it to suggest that Ovechkin is better than Crosby? Well that just makes too much sense! Two polarizing world leaders discussing two polarizing hockey leaders, the brilliance writes itself. And the better Captain came out on top. From presidents to dictators, Ovi being better than Sid is something everyone can agree on.

This submission is so cool! It’s a collection, as you can clearly see, of the DC area newspaper headlines from the second half of the playsoffs. This submission came to us from someone who used to live in the area, but no longer does. This collection was saved for him by his mother, who is still in Capitals territory. Is there anything more genuine than a mother’s love? Look at that dedication! There’s at least eleven sports sections from the Washington Post on that table! Years from now, it will be so cool to go back and relive these moments with these articles. Hopefully some of them are worth some money some day soon!

So we already found out we have a new little Caps fan on the way, but what about our youngest fans who’re already here! This little lady is Kristina Marie Zahn. Her proud papa send us this photo, I assume, on the night she was born. I read somewhere that babies born during the playoffs all go home bundled in a little Caps jersey rather than in a blanket. Can anyone confirm? I love this concept! Congratulations to the new parents and on your new little fan! May she grow up having a lot to cheer about!

In the last installment of NoVa CAPtures we saw a young man celebrating the Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory by eating cereal out of a model of Lord Stanley. Here, we see a couple of fans posing with the Cup and drinking from it! It isn’t quite as impressive as Ovi doing a keg stand with it, but considering they got to see the Cup up close and personal, I’m sure they’re not complaining. With the Capitals hosting their fan fest later this weekend, I hope to see a lot more pictures of fans with the Cup being sent to us very soon!

We’ve received a lot of Championship Hats posed in a number of different positions over the last couple of days, though. This one is my favorite. There’s such beautiful symbolism in this photo, and an absolutely stunning rainbow on top of it! Who know that the pot of gold would actually be a Cup of silver?
