While longtime defenseman John Carlson (and to some degree Michal Kempny) have been at the forefront of the team’s free agent news, center Jay Beagle’s name came up earlier today as teams begin the interview process with pending free agents. And while nothing has commenced, it is not with the Capitals.

Per Sportsnet’s Rick Dhaliwal, the Vancouver Canucks have reached out to Beagle’s agent as part of the interview process prior to July 1. While teams are not able to disclose negotiation details, agents can begin setting the parameters for a potential deal come July 1. Beagle, who stated in his exit interview that he would be willing to wait for Capitals General Manager Brian MacLellan to sort out things with other free agents like Carlson, Kempny, and right wing Tom Wilson (a restricted free agent), before making any decisions on his future. Beagle has spent 10 seasons with the Capitals after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and spending time with their American Hockey League affiliate Hershey Bears before joining the team for good in the 2010-11 season, recording 116 points (51 goals, 65 assists) in 471 games played, including a seven-goal, 15-assist performance this season.

Beagle said he would be willing to wait, to me Beagle is just as much a lifetime capital as OV or Backy. I know 4th line Center doesnt come with the glory of top 6 guys but “Snoopy” as some fans call him has been a fan favorite for his defensive prowess, pk ability, faceoff king… all priceless intangibles to a cup contending team. So after getting Kempny&Willy done.. get Beagle done.
