The Washington Capitals selected defenseman Martin Fehervary from IK Oskarshamn of Allsvenskan with the 46th overall pick and right wing Kody Clark from the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League from the 47th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

The Capitals acquired the 46th overall pick from the New Jersey Devils in the Marcus Johansson trade on July 2, 2017. That pick originally came from the Florida Panthers, who sent forward Marc Savard and the pick to New Jersey in exchange for rookies Graham Black and Paul Thompson. The Capitals also received New Jersey’s third-round pick (87th overall) in the Johansson trade.

Fehervary, 18, recorded a goal and seven points in 42 games for IK Oskarshamn in 2017-18. He had a plus-minus rating of +1. In the playoffs, he recorded one goal and three points in eight games. The native of Bratislava, Slovakia represented Slovakia at the World Junior Championships and tallied one goal and two points in five games. He is listed as a 6’2” 194-pound defenseman.

NHL Network said Fehervary is strong at defensive play but needs to work on his offensive game.

The Capitals acquired the 47th overall pick from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for goaltender Philipp Grubauer and defenseman Brooks Orpik last evening.

Clark, 18, recorded 18 goals and 39 points in 56 games for Ottawa in 2017-18. He had a plus-minus rating of +7. In the playoffs, he recorded no points and was a -4 in five games.  The 6’1” 179-pound right winger tallied 25 goals and 50 points in 113 games in his career at Ottawa and had a +/- rating of -10.

NHL Network said Clark is strong with puck possession and has an excellent wrist shot.

Clark’s father Wendel was drafted as the first pick overall by Toronto played 793 regular season games with six different NHL clubs, scoring 330 goals and picking up 234 assists for 564 total points.

Some notable Capitals selections in the second round of the draft included defenseman Dmitry Orlov in 2009, defenseman Madison Bowey in 2013, goaltender Vitek Vanacek in 2014, and defenseman Jonas Seigenthaler in 2015. The Capitals did not have a second-round pick in 2017.

Sixteen players from Washington’s roster in 2017-18 (Andre Burakovsky, Nicklas Backstrom, Madison Bowey, Christian Djoos, Alex Ovechkin, Braden Holtby, Philipp Grubauer, Chandler Stephenson, John Carlson, Braden Holtby, Dmitry Orlov, Jakub Vrana, Travis Boyd, Shane Gersich, Nathan Walker, and Tom Wilson) were selected by the Capitals in the draft. They made up 66.8% of the team’s goals, 69.4% of the team’s assists, and 68.4% of the team’s points last season.
