Capitals GM Brian MacLellan Optimistic About Re-Signing John Carlson

Capitals’ General Manager Brian MacLellan met with the media following the first round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft in Dallas, Texas, Friday night. During the brief media session MacLellan was asked about the current status of contract negotiations with Capitals defensman John Carlson.

“We’re close,” MacLellan told reporters. “Hopefully we get something done in the next couple of days.

Earlier in the day, MacLellan sent goaltender Philipp Grubauer and defensman Brooks Orpik to the Colorado Avalanche in return for Colorado’s second round pick in this years draft. The move was mostly made to free-up salary cap space to re-sign several key players this summer, including John Carlson.

MacLellan was asked about the trade at the conclusion of the first round Friday night.

Carlson will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if he and the Capitals are unable to come to terms beforehand. Unrestricted free agents are allowed to begin meeting with other teams starting this Sunday at noon.
