Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz finally coached a team to a Stanley Cup championship. He achieved this feat in the final year of his four-year deal.
Trotz’s NHL coaching resume began in Nashville with the Predators as an expansion team in 1998-99. He spent 15 seasons there before he came to Washington.
Trotz saw great success in Washington guiding them to the playoffs each of his first three years but as he entered the final year of his four-year contract there was some uncertainty. There were no talks of what his future will hold between him and general manager Brian MacLellan. Despite that, Trotz led a team that many expected not to even make the playoffs all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

MacLellan was asked about Trotz’s future.
“He’s under contract until July 1 and he just won a Stanley Cup,” MacLellan responded. “If he wants to be back… he’ll be back.”
During Trotz’s press conference he said that he “absolutely” sees a future with him in Washington.

From getting his players to buy in, to getting the fans to believe, it looks like Trotz is here to stay in Washington.

The Caps have had mostly superb Head Coaches through the years, interspersed with some very strange birds indeed. Barry Trotz is a Class Act and this fan would be delighted to have him return.
Even though I think Rierdon is a superb bench prospect I’ve always contended that BT is the best coach we ever had. My only complaint with Trotz has been the amount of time he plays or sits the younger players on our roster. Outside of that I think there’s no denying the fact that he’s gotten this team to play a much better brand of hockey than any of his predecessors could. And this year, our team exhibited more “want-to” from one end of the season to the other than it has at any former time.
So if Barry wants to come back I say let’s give him a second four year plan.I feel he’s earned it and I also think that with our mixture of veterans and youth–plus the youngsters we have in the pipeline, we can bag at least two more Cups in the next four years…
