The Washington Capitals have landed in DC at Dulles Airport! There was only one problem though: they couldn’t exit the plane. With lightning and heavy rain coming down, the team couldn’t leave the plane until the storm cleared up.

Barry Trotz held a conference call with the media while the team was trapped in the plane.
“It’s pouring and personnel can’t take us off the plane… We’re grounded in DC but our guys are fine. It’s just another layer of adversity we have to go through,” said Trotz.
The grounds crew wasn’t allowed to come out and hook up the stairs until the lightning passed. The ramp was closed. The Capitals were stuck on the plane for nearly two hours. Alex Ovechkin’s family was patiently waiting for him.

Finally the lightning was gone and players were able to exit and head to their cars and families.
FINALLY! After circling in the sky, then almost 2 hours stuck on the plane on the ground because of lightning, the @Capitals finally walk off the plane. None would speak to us or any fans. The team had police come tell us not to try and talk to them. pic.twitter.com/eiTXcWLH5K

The Capitals will relax tonight before hitting the ice on Friday morning for an optional practice.
