The Washington Capitals fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 (OT) Sunday night at Capital One Arena. Jay Beagle and Alex Ovechkin would notch tallies in the opening frame to give the Caps a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. After an Ovechkin power play goal, the Blue Jackets would respond with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead at the second intermission. The Capitals would tie the game with a T.J. Oshie power play goal late in the final frame to send the game to overtime. The Jackets would win it in overtime. The series now shifts to Columbus for games 3 and 4. Game 3 is Tuesday night.

Philipp Grubauer got the start in goal for the Capitals. Sergei Bobrovsky started in net for the Blue Jackets. The Capitals starting forwards and defensive pairs:

FIRST PERIOD
The Capitals struck quickly with a deflected goal by Jay Beagle just 2:12 into the contest. Brooks Orpik and Jakub Jerabek were credited with the helpers.

The Capitals would add to their early lead with a power play goal from Alex Ovechkin at 13:26 of the opening frame. John Carlson and T.J. Oshie were credited with the assists.

The Blue Jackets would cut the Caps lead in half with a patented stretch pass from Nick Foligno to Cam Atkinson with 1:35 remaining in the period.

The period would conclude with the Caps leading 2-1. The Capitals outshot the Blue Jackets 17-8 for the first 20 minutes. Andre Burakovsky would leave the game with an upper body injury and not return to the game.

SECOND PERIOD
The Capitals would re-establish their two-goal lead with a power play goal from Alex Ovechkin at 4:09 of the middle frame, his second power play goal of the game. Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson were credited with the assists.

But the Blue Jackets would answer. Josh Anderson would finish the end of a three-on-two rush at 8:49 of the middle frame.

The Blue Jackets would tie the game with a power play goal by Cam Atkinson at 11:13 of the second period.

The Jackets would take their first lead of the game with another power play goal in the waning seconds of the second period. Zach Werenski would notch the go-ahead tally at 18:52 of the second period.

The second period would end with the Blue Jackets holding a 4-3 lead. Columbus outshot Washington 14-12 for the middle frame. Washington led 31-22 after two periods of play.

THIRD PERIOD
Braden Holtby would replace Philipp Grubauer in goal to start the third period. The Capitals would step-up their offensive zone pressure for a majority of the final frame, registering 16 shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the third period.

Finally, the Capitals would tie the game with a power play goal from T.J. Oshie at 16:25 of the final frame.

Regulation would end in a 4-4 tie.

OVERTIME
The Blue Jackets would win it in overtime.
