KVRR Sports is reporting that Capitals forward prospect Shane Gersich, a 5’11”, 175-pound left winger, will forego the last year of his college eligibility with the University of North Dakota and sign a contract with the Capitals in the offseason.

The Capitals took Gersich with the 134th overall pick in the fifth round of 2014 NHL Draft and he has spent the past three years playing with North Dakota.

In 40 games this season, Gersich registered 13 goals and 29 points after tallying 21 goals and 37 points along with a +16 rating in 40 games last season.

Last season Gersich was on a high-powered top-line that included Brock Boeser (Vancouver Canucks) and Tyson Jost (Colorado Avalanche), both currently playing in the NHL.

In his freshman season, the 21-year old center tallied nine goals and 11 points in 37 contests. He was also a +15 in his first year at North Dakota.

Brad Schlossman, college hockey writer for the Grand Forks Herald, is also reporting that Gersich is indeed having discussions with the Capitals, but no contract has been signed as of yet.

Gersich, a native of Chaska, Minnesota, has also played for the U.S. National Development Team, where he had 16 goals and 32 points in 61 games, and the U.S. Under-18 team, where he had 8 goals and 8 assists in 26 games.

Gersich’s top highlight came from last season against in a game against the University of Denver. Gersich went end-to-end, finishing with a “spin-o-rama” goal for the overtime victory.

He joins T.J. Oshie as a University of North Dakota player in the Caps’ system.

We will have updates as information becomes available.
