Following an exciting game on Monday night in an overtime win over the Jets that saw Alex Ovechkin score his 600th goal, a handful of Capitals players hit the ice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex for an optional practice to work on their game. Now that a milestone has been achieved, they can now set their sights on the road ahead which promises to be an interesting and bumpy ride. Here’s the scene from Tuesday’s optional practice, direct from Kettler.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Check out this great move by Jay Beagle.

The Capitals mostly worked on their passing, shooting and screening at the optional. Here’s a 2-on-1 screen.

Jakub Vrana partaking in the 2-on-1’s. You’re welcome, ladies.

The passing drills got more interesting as they added some footwork element with Gatorade bottles and sticks on the ice.

The forwards did extra work with the Gatorade bottles by skating around them before flinging a shot towards the net and then deflecting the puck.

Assistant coach Blaine Forsythe then took off his gloves and put them on the ice for the forwards to skate around.

Travis Boyd, who has been enjoying his time up here with the Capitals, is still on the hunt for his first career NHL goal. Perhaps we could see him do a trick like this out there.

SHAVINGS

  • Alex Ovechkin’s two goal performance last night was his 119th career multi-goal game, which ranks 16th all-time in the NHL.
  • Ovechkin has scored a goal in 46.2 percent of his games in his career (457 out of 990 games).
  • Ovechkin’s two goals in last night’s game were the first time he has scored against Connor Hellebuyck. Ovechkin has scored on 128 different goaltenders in his career including 95 goaltenders where he’s scored at least two goals on.
