The Capitals bolstered their forward depth today, acquiring forwards Joe Whitney and Adam Chapie from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward John Albert and defenseman Hubert Labrie.

Per the Capitals, both Whitney and Chapie will report to the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears and are expected to face Hartford tomorrow.

Whitney is a three-time AHL All-Star who was the captain of the Rangers’ AHL affiliate Hartford Wolfpack prior to the trade. In 40 games played with the Wolfpack this season, Whitney recorded 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists). A proven leader, Whitney brings experience to a young Hershey team. In addition to his lengthy AHL resume, Whitney has also played in five NHL games with the New Jersey Devils, with one game played in the 2013-14 season, and the remaining four coming in 2014-15. In his AHL career, Whitney has scored 20 or more goals and 50 or more points three times in his time in the AHL.

Chapie has no NHL experience and is in his second professional season. In 31 games with Hartford, he scored two goals and added five assists for seven points. In addition, he played in 11 games with Greenville, the Rangers’ ECHL affiliate, recording 17 points. In 148 career games in the NCAA with UMass-Lowell, Chapie recorded 95 points.

Albert signed last summer with the Capitals as a free agent and has spent the entire season in Hershey, recording 11 points in 33 games played. In 35 games played with the Bears, Labrie recorded seven points (one goal, six assists), and 11 points in 70 games played last season in Hershey.
