Ilya Samsonov Beats Moscow Dynamo

On December 27, Metallurg Magnitogorsk returned home to Magnitogorsk to host HC Moscow Dynamo.  Prior to this game, Dynamo had 17 wins in regulation, 7 shootout wins, 18 regular losses, 1 overtime loss, and 3 shootout losses.

Magnitka started Ilya Samsonov again – for the third consecutive game.  Vasily Koshechkin, normally their #1 goalie, was dressed as backup.  He had not dressed for either of the two previous games.  Jan Kovar was suspended for the match due to a misconduct earned in the previous game – against SKA on Christmas Day.

Magnitka came out of the gate firing, angry about the loss to SKA in their previous game.  At 2:51, Matt Ellison, accepting a pass from Wojtek Wolski, notched the first goal of the game.  The other assist was from Nikita Pivtsakin.  Ellison scored again just three minutes later, getting assists from Denis Denisov and Pivtsakin.  At the end of the first period, Magnikta led 2-0.  Metallurg Magnitogorsk outshot their opponents that period, 13-8.

Dmitry Markovin scored for Dynamo nearly twelve minutes into the period so that Dynamo avoided the shutout.  But then Andrei Chibisov scored the fifth goal for Magnitka so the score was now 5-1.  There was no scoring during the third period, so the final score was 5-1.

In this game, Samsonov saved 33 of the 34 shots directed at goal, for a save percentage of .971 for the game.  For the season, he now has a .916 save percentage and goals against average of 2.71.
