Alex Ovechkin’s Top Five Goals Against Henrik Lundqvist

As the Washington Capitals prepare for their game against the New York Rangers on Wednesday night, NoVa Caps takes a look at the five best of 22 goals in Alex Ovechkin‘s career against the Henrik Lundqvist, the most goals he’s had against a single goalie in his NHL career:

5. Inside Out

After getting a pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov from center ice, Ovechkin looks like he’s going to toe drag around defenseman Marc Staal but instead goes back to his forehand and rips it to the top left corner past Henrik Lundqvist.

4. Coast-to-coast for 499

After defenseman Nate Schmidt saves a goal from crossing the goal line, Ovechkin takes the puck in front of the crease, skates as fast as a cheetah to the other end of the ice and wheels around forward Rick Nash. He shot the puck from the left circle and ripped it past Lundqvist for his 499th career goal, an overtime game winner.

3. “A Magnificent Goal For Point Number 500”

Ovechkin picks up a cross-ice feed from Nicklas Backstrom and then toe drags through the legs of a Rangers’ defenseman and then roofs a one-handed shot past Lundqvist as it trickles over the goal line.

2. Cutting Through the Defense

In this one, Ovechkin retrieves the pass near the boards and takes off. He flies between Rangers’ defensemen Ryan McDonough and Dan Girardi. McDonough actually ends up tripping him but as he’s on his knees, Ovechkin picks the puck to the top left corner and puts a wicked wrist shot past Lundqvist.

1. End to End and Falling Down (Again)

All five of these goals can be number one but only one can win it all. After picking the puck up along the wall, Ovechkin roars through the neutral zone fights off one Rangers’ forechecker and then dangles the puck through another one’s legs. While falling down near the blue paint, Ovechkin backhands a shot to the far corner of the net past Lundqvist and celebrates into the boards.

  1. Harrison Brown says:

Anyone of these can be No. 1. Wanted to put No. 2 first overall but a lot of people would argue with that.

  2. Jon Sorensen says:

499 is my current favorite. Complete chaos on the defensive end, and truly a coast-to-coaster.

  3. I agree with Jon, 499 is good. #1 from 09 is also solid

  4. Diane Doyle says:

Here’s one of my favorites — when Ovi scored the game tying goal vs the Rangers in Game 1 of the 2011 playoffs. It tied the game with 6 1/2 minutes to go.
