After a big 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, the Washington Capitals squared off against the Edmonton Oilers from Capital One Arena on Sunday evening.  The Capitals claimed their 2nd straight victory over the Oilers on Sunday night as they defeated them 2-1 in the shootout.  Here is the full recap.

Game Notes:

-Braden Holtby started his 2^nd straight game, after recorded his 200^th career win over Pittsburgh

-Laurent Brossoit started his 2^nd game of the season, as starter Cam Talbot received the night off

-Brett Connolly made his return to the Capitals lineup

-Capitals scratches for the game: Aaron Ness and Nathan Walker

FIRST PERIOD

-Capitals get first powerplay of the game after a Brad Malone slashing call.  The Capitals did not score with the man advantage.

-Capitals get their 2^nd man advantage a few moments later after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins received a minor for hooking.  The Capitals did not score with their 2^nd man advantage.

-Devante Smith-Pelly took a puck off the knee, and remained in the lineup the rest of the game.

-Tom Wilson and Patrick Maroon received matching minors for roughing.  After their trip to the penalty box, they would drop the gloves with 1 second remaining in the period.

-Capitals outshot the Oilers 7-5 in the period.

SECOND PERIOD

-Oscar Klefbom scored the opening goal of the game, and after coach’s challenge by the Capitals, was deemed no goal.  Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ skate made contact with Braden Holtby resulting in goaltender interference.  The game remained scoreless.

-Braden Holtby was strong at the end of the 2nd period, with big stops on Connor McDavid and Patrick Maroon.

-The Oilers had more jump in the second period, and outshot the Capitals 12-7 in the middle frame.  The Capitals were outshot 17-14 through 2 periods of play.

THIRD PERIOD

-92 seconds into the frame, the Oilers get on the board first.  Jujhar Khaira scored his first goal since January 16.

-With just under 15 minutes to go, Dmitry Orlov tied the game up off a beautiful pass from Tom Wilson.  That assist was the 50th of Wilson’s career.  It was the first goal of the season for Orlov.

-The Oilers held a territorial advantage in the 3rd period, and outshot the Capitals 12-5 in the final frame.  The Capitals were outshot 29-19 at the end of regulation.

OVERTIME

-The overtime moved quickly.  Chandler Stephenson was slashed late, which gave the Capitals a late 10-second man advantage in the frame.  No team scored in overtime.

SHOOTOUT

-Capitals elected to shoot first.  T.J. Oshie was first up for the Capitals, and he scored to put the Capitals up 1-0.  Leon Draisaitl hit the post on the next turn, and did not score.  Evgeny Kuznetsov shot second for the Capitals, but did not score.  Connor McDavid shot second for the Oilers, but missed the net.  Nicklas Backstrom shot third for the Capitals, but did not score.  Mark Letestu shot third for the Oilers, but did not get anything past Braden Holtby.

SKATE SHAVINGS

-The Capitals were outshot 30-19 in the game
-John Carlson logged 29:17 of icetime
-Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, and Evgeny Kuznetsov all logged over 22 minutes of icetime
