The Washington Capitals beat the he Arizona Coyotes 3-2 (OT) Monday night at Capital One Arena. The win raised the Capitals record to 8-6-1, 17 points for the season. The Capitals next face the Sabres in Buffalo on Tuesday night. Puck drop is 7:00 PM.
Braden Holtby got the start in goal for the Capitals. It’s likely that Philipp Grubauer will get the start tomorrow night in Buffalo.
Scott Wedgewood started for Arizona. This was his third start of the season, and first since start since October 31.
Nathan Walker and Aaron Ness were the healthy scratches for the Caps. Matt Niskanen, Andre Burakovsky, Brett Connolly and Tyler Graovac were out due to injury.
FIRST PERIOD
The Coyotes, familiar with grabbing early leads in games this season, wasted little time in notching the game’s first tally, as Yotes young phenom Clayton Keller wristed one by Braden Holtby at the 1:00 mark of the opening frame. The Coyotes have now scored first in 12 of 16 games. They won only 2 of those first 11.
The Coyotes would make it 2-0 5:42 later on a beautiful centering pass from Christian Dvorak to Christian Fischer at the 6:42 minute mark.
The Capitals would cut the Yotes lead in half with a nice twisting backhander by Devante Smith-Pelly at 8:41 of the first period.

The period would end with Arizona leading the Capitals 2-1. The Capitals lead shots on goal 13-6 for the opening frame. There were no penalties in the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
The Capitals would be the benefactors of the game’s first power play just 39 seconds into the middle frame, but once again, the Capitals would be unable to capitalize. The Capitals dropped to 1 for 20 on the power play at home. The Caps haven’t scored a 5-on-4 goal, home or away, since October 13.
The Capitals would return to the power play at the 15:54 mark of the second period, but this man-advantage would also end up fruitless. The Capitals were awarded a third power play of the period at 9:29 of the middle frame, but once again, no joy.
Tom Wilson would drop the gloves with Schenn with five minutes left in the middle frame.
The Caps would get a fourth power play later in the period, and this time the Captain would put an end to the drought, notching a power play goal at 14:23 of the middle period, though the game at 2-2.

The period would end with the game tied 2-2. The Caps led in shots on goal 13-12 for the second period and 26-18 through 40 minutes of play.
THIRD PERIOD
The Capitals were rewarded with yet another power play just 16 seconds into the final frame, but the Caps reverted to old ways, with 0 shots on,the man advantage.
The Caps would get their 6th power play of the game with 11:02 remaining in regulation, but no damages were done. The final frame would ultimately go scoreless, sending the game into overtime.

- John Carlson scored the game winning goal in overtime. That marked Carlson’s first goal of the season, his 14th game winning goal of his career and the second overtime goal of his career.
- With that power play goal, the 216th power play goal of his career, Alex Ovechkin has passed Joe Nieuwendyk for 12th place on the NHL power-play goals list.
- The Capitals recorded 75 shot attempts and allowed 49.
- The Capitals two-goal comeback is the third two-goal comeback of the season.

Some notes – I think Holtby lets in more goals on the first five shots and first five minutes than any goalie in the league…
The highest paid assistant coach in all of sports, Orpik, should have been benched after the first goal. But then again, he shouldnt have started. He literally allowed Keller to walk in free of any D… eller on the point shoots it directly into Kellers legs. Orpik and Chorney terrify me everytime they are on the ice.
Why didnt walker play tonight?
Not sure what to make of that one, but the important thing is they are winning these games with a severely depleted lineup.

Relieved they won. Even if when the Caps were down 2-0, I did have that fear that the Caps would be the first to lose to the Yotes in regulation. That would have been a Coyote Ugly result. Then again, the Yotes can’t seem to hold onto leads to save their lives. Yotes have lots of young talent. I doubt they are really first year expansion team bad. (They are missing Chychrun and Hjalmersson on defense.)
