Youth and inexperience have been the struggle for the Capitals this season, and now the injury bug might be playing a role as well. After Andre Burakovsky sat out of practice with an injury of his own, Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals superstar Captain might have suffered an injury of his own.
Towards the tail end of Monday’s practice, Ovechkin tangled legs with a teammate during an intense 2-on-2 battle drill on short ice. After his legs got tangled up, he fell awkwardly into the boards. After he was checked out on the bench he left practice.
The #Caps were doing a vigorous 2-on-2 small-ice battle drill when Ovechkin went down. Appeared to tangle legs with a teammate.

Ovechkin got tangled up with teammate in two-on-two battle drill. Then went into the boards awkwardly. Practice just ended. Could be nothing

Ovechkin got off to a fast start to begin the season with hat tricks in his first two games and is tied Nikita Kucherov for the league lead in goals with 10. Losing Ovechkin could be a big blow to the Capitals as they wait for Matt Niskanen’s return and Burakovsky’s status. However, like my friend Isabelle pointed out, it could be nothing. Caps fans are hoping for the second part.
We’ll learn more later in the day on if he is indeed injured and the extent of it so check back for an update.
[UPDATE: 1:00PM]
Just talked to Ovechkin. He said he tweaked something but should be fine. He’s at the #Caps canine calendar shoot. pic.twitter.com/t7gTIMNhjX

Trotz think Ovechkin is going to be OK. Needs to talk the trainer for more info. Said Burakovsky might “miss some time” here.
