Capitals Recall Madison Bowey, Place Matt Niskanen on Long-Term Injured Reserve

Early Saturday morning, the Capitals recalled Madison Bowey from Hershey after the team announced that Matt Niskanen is week-to-week with an upper-body injury he sustained in the Capitals’ 5-2 win at the New Jersey Devils on Friday. He got placed on long-term injured reserve. Bowey will likely be in the Capitals lineup and make his NHL debut on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers. 

While the Caps say Niskanen is week-to-week, placing him on LTIR means he a minimum of 10 games over 24 days.

Last season, Bowey scored 3 goals and had 14 points in 43 games. He missed a significant amount of time due to injury. In the previous year, Bowey led all Bears’ defensemen with 25 assists and 29 points and won the award for the best +/- on the team and the best defenseman in Hershey that year.

The Capitals drafted Bowey with their second-round pick in 2015 after scoring 58 goals and 172 points with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets during his two-year tenure there. Bowey won the World Junior Championship with Canada in 2015 as well as the WHL championship. He was also a first-team All-Star with the WHL.

After having an impressive training camp with the Capitals, he didn’t make the team due to waivers eligibility. Christian Djoos, who was third in the AHL in points by defensemen (58), and Aaron Ness, who had another strong preseason showing, both had the advantage of having waivers required. Bowey was waiver exempt. That won’t be the case next year, as he is a restricted free agent after 2017-18.

In three preseason games with the Capitals, he was strong with an assist, nine blocked shots, five hits, one takeaway, and only three giveaways. He averaged 22:01 worth of ice times per game, including 17:17 at even strength. He averaged 1:37 on the power play per game and 3:08 on the penalty kill per night.

    Excited to see what Bowey can do, but also unfortunate to hear about Nisky. Hopefully he can make a quick (but full) recovery and return to the lineup soon!

    Honestly the best thing that could happen to the Caps/ They need to start playing the younger guys and let some of the older ones go. After this season but hopefully starting in dec/jan they will trade and get something for Carlson, Eller, Chiasson, Orpik, Grubauer, Niskanen, Beagle and Chorney (30). Would rather trade them and get something for them than let them go. Like the players they did last summer for nothing. I realize that they were in a playoff run and thought they had a chance for the Cup last year but that is not so this year. There is no need to try to make the playoffs this year or next as it is time to start to rebuild. They need to get younger and faster. I also would not sign any big free agents the next 2 years. Use that money to keep our own players and draft wisely.
