The Washington Capitals are preparing for the start of training camp tomorrow. All of the players attending this year’s camp reported to Kettler Capitals Iceplex today for pre-camp physicals and an internal media day. All the returning members from last year’s team seemed to have fun with their teammates, including defenseman Dmitry Orlov and center Evgeny Kuznetsov.
A video was released by the Capitals this morning of Orlov, 26, and Kuznetsov, 25, playing a couple of children’s games. First up, “Don’t. Real the Ice”. As one can see below, Kuznetsov bested his countryman in a rather quick contest between the two.
Next up, “Rock-em Sock-em Robots”. This time Dmitry Orlov would deliver the winning blow:
The two Russians have plenty to smile about, after signing long-term extensions with the team in the offseason. Kuznetsov signed an eight-year contract worth $62.4 million ($7.8 million cap hit), while Orlov signed a six-year contract worth $30.5 million ($5.1 million cap hit). With the two extensions, Orlov and Kuznetsov are now core pieces for the Capitals and they will need to be consistent in production.
Orlov scored six goals and 33 points, along with a +30 rating, good for second best on the team behind Brooks Orpik. Kuznetsov had 19 goals and 59 points in all 82 games last season, and shined in the playoffs, with five goals and 10 points.
It’s back to work for the two Russians and the Capitals tomorrow morning, as they get set to begin training camp. The Capitals will be hosting the team’s annual Media Day tomorrow, September 15. During this time, media will have chances to speak with multiple players, coaches, and prospects throughout the course of the day. The players attending are broken into three teams: Team Red, Team White, and Team Blue. Alex Ovechkin will be the first player available to the media, at 12:30 P.M. More info can be found here.
