Washington Capitals’ center Nicklas Backstrom has donated his entire bonus check that he received from Team Sweden for winning the goal medal in this year’s World Championship. He donated the money to his former youth hockey organization, the Valbo Hockey Club.

Backstrom’s father Anders, presented the check, worth 75,000 SEK or approximately $10,000 US, to Valbo HC on his son’s behalf Saturday afternoon.

“It was an obvious choice for him. It’s Nicklas’ desire to continue contributing to Valbo HC,” said father Anders Bäckström, upon handing over the cheque.

“First and foremost, we thank Nicklas. It displays the heart he has for the parent team. It’s a huge thing for us that Nicklas is contributing, and it means a lot,” said Magnus Eriksson, Sports Director for Valbo HC.

The Valbo HC is located in Valbo, Sweden, about 5 miles southwest of Backstrom’s hometown of Gavle, Sweden. Valbo plays in the Swedish Division 2, the fourth level of ice hockey in Sweden. Backstrom started his ice hockey career in Valbo AIF, now known as Valbo HC.

Valbo HC plays all of their home games at NickBack Arena, which is named after Backstrom, who assumed arena sponsorship on August 28th, 2011. NickBack Arena is the site of the annual Nicklas Backstrom Cup, held each summer for under 16 hockey players in the Gavle area.
