After the 2017 Gagarin Cup playoffs were over, Alexander Semin’s KHL team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, decided not to renew his contract. Semin did not find another team to join in either the KHL or any other professional hockey league. Instead, he figured it was time to move on from professional hockey.
He applied to the Siberian Federal University (SFU) and plans to study metallurgy full-time. Specifically, he plans to pursue the Master’s Program in “Metallurgy of Non-Ferrous Metals” offered by the University’s Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals and Materials Science. He will be studying the “Theory and Technology of Foundry Production of Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys”.

Students in that program intern at metallurgical enterprises, including at the plants of RUSAL. The Press Service at the Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Plant reports that students of the target group RUSAL are trained by joint programs with SFU and receive the Master’s Degree.
It is interesting that a player who played his last professional season with a team called Metallurg (i.e. Metallurg Magnitogorsk) now plans to become a metallurgist.

Alex Semin scored 166 goals for the Caps between 2006 and 2011 before, to me, losing interest in the game. He was never really a two way player, but at the beginning of his career I think it was fair to say–as it was once said by Mark Messier about Semin’s fellow Russian forward Alexei Kovalev) “He has abilities you just can’t teach…”
There were (many) times when Alex Semin looked like a cross between Glenn Anderson and Yvan Cournoyer—and other times when he looked like a cross between Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd–especially on defense.
Even with the forgoing in mind, I wish Alex all the best in life. I loved his eye-popping skill on those nights when he displayed it, and hope that he and his family enjoy health and happiness in the years ahead…
