In the weeks since before the NHL Expansion Draft, the Capitals have undergone some significant changes, from losing promising young defenseman Nate Schmidt in the draft to trading longtime forward Marcus Johansson. General Manager Brian MacLellan has been busy man. In this tribute, NoVa Caps’ good friend Emma Vonn Hoene has created a video dedicated to those players who have departed the team in 2017. Check out another of her videos from the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

To recap, the Caps lost Schmidt in the Expansion Draft, defenseman Karl Alzner signed with the Montreal Canadiens after nine years with the Capitals, trade deadline acquisition Kevin Shattenkirk signed with the New York Rangers, right wing Justin Williams signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Capitals were forced to trade Marcus Johansson to free up cap space to re-sign Andre Burakovsky and Philipp Grubauer. Each brought a different element and set of skills to the team and their contributions will always be appreciated.

About Michael Fleetwood

Michael Fleetwood was born into a family of Caps fans and has been watching games as long as he can remember. Born the year the Capitals went to their first and only Stanley Cup Final, Michael is a diehard Caps fan and is the owner of the very first Joe Beninati jersey and since then, has met Joe B himself. His favorite player became Nate Schmidt after meeting Schmidt in a Hershey hotel while in Hershey PA to see the Bears play, shortly after Schmidt was injured during a conditioning stint. Michael is also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Orioles
