Dietz Takes His Game to KHL

labrie-dietzDarren Dietz, who appeared in 39 games with the Hershey Bears this season, has signed with Barys Astana of the KHL. The defenseman left Hershey in a swap with the Texas Stars in March.

A native of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Dietz has been a journeyman of sorts since turning pro in 2013. He spent two seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs and went with the team the following year as they moved to St. John’s. In 2015-2016, he made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens where he scored his first NHL goal. He appeared in 13 games with the Canadiens, recording a goal and four assists.

During the 2016-2017 season, Dietz started out with the Bears, appearing in 39 games where he recorded six goals and six assists. In March, Dietz was reassigned by the Capitals to the Texas Stars in exchange for defenseman Mattias Backman. Dietz appeared in 13 games for Texas, recording a pair of assists.

With the departure of Dietz, the Bears have two RFAs (Travis Boyd and Liam O’Brien) and four UFAs (Garrett Mitchell, Christian Thomas, Cody Corbett, and Tom Gilbert) still unsigned. Additionally there are several AHL Free Agents (Ryan Bourque, Dustin Gazley, Dylan Margonari, John Parker, Kelly Zajac, Hubert Labrie, Joey Leach, Parker Milner, and Adam Morrison) still unsigned as well.
