The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Christian Djoos to a two-year, $1.3 million contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Djoos’ contract is two-way during the 2017-18 season and one-way during the 2018-19 season, at $650,000 per season. Djoos will earn $70,000 for the 2017-2018 season at the AHL (Bears) level. Djoos was a pending restricted free agent.
Djoos is expected to be a prime candidate for replacing Nate Schmidt, who was selected by the Vegas Knights in the recent NHL Expansion Draft. He will battle with Madison Bowey and other prospects this summer to make the team.
Djoos, the 22-year-old 2nd year defenseman out of Gothenberg, Sweden, was named the winner of the Dan Sernoffsky Award for the most improved player this year in Hershey. (presented by NoVa Caps Julie Beidler)
Djoos won the CCM/AHL Player of the Month award this past March. Here is a highlight package prepared for his play.

There’s no way an AHL D-man becomes a top 4 D-man. It just doesn’t happen. You’re basically saying he’s as good as Orlov, Carlson, or Nisk right now, and better than Oripk. If true, why wasn’t he here last season?
That’s not really what is being said. The expansion draft weakens all teams. That’s the nature of expansion. The next viable option, considering salary cap constraints, is an AHL D-man.
