The Washington Capitals Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian MacLellan issued the following statement today on Nate Schmidt, who was selected by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL Expansion Draft.
“We want to thank Nate for his contributions to our organization the past four seasons and wish him all the best in Vegas. We feel we have a young group of up-and-coming defensemen who will now have an opportunity in Washington and are ready to make the jump with our club.”
Nate Schmidt took to Twitter late Wednesday night to thank everyone in Washington:
Thank you to the @Capitals, my teammates, and to everyone that has given me an incredible amount of support. I really appreciate it!

Could have said a bit more about Nate…in my opinion.
Agreed. Seems to be wanting to turn the page asap.
Agreed
Very disappointed in the GMBM’s comments. GMGM would have said it much better.
GMGM just won’t stop f’ing us…he OWED us an Orpik selection… As for GMBM’s comments…maybe Schmitty is better off in Vegas…the Caps never seemed to appreciate him….GMBM’s comments just underscore that fact… I really want to cheer for Vegas and I LOVE Schmitty… but I hate Fleury and GMGM soooo much…
Seems to me BM doesn’t really appreciate or respect anyone on the Capitals. When a GM calls out his superstar captain to the media, he certainly isn’t going to offer more than a handful of words thanking? a player at Schmidt’s level. BM needs to jump down from the high horse he has placed himself on and show he actually does care about those people that are actually drawing the fans that pay his overpriced salary. That said, I think the Caps are going to be sorry they didn’t protect Schmidt. He, Oshie and Burakovsky are the only players on the whole team that played with any energy. He will be missed for many seasons to come.
