The Washington Capitals and the NHL have announced the club’s home opener for the 2017-18 season will be on Saturday, Oct. 7 vs. the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m. at Verizon Center.
The complete 2017-18 NHL schedule will be released tomorrow (Thursday) at 3PM.
On a side note, the Penguins will hoist the Cup banner at their home opener on October 4th, when they host the St. Louis Blues – not the Capitals.

The Capitals are 14-2-1-1 all-time in home openers at Verizon Center and will face Montreal in their home opener for the second time in franchise history (2014-15). Washington posted a 2-1-0 record against Montreal last season and is 37-32-9-2 all-time at home against the Canadiens. Nicklas Backstrom (3g, 1a) and Alex Ovechkin (1g, 3a) led the Capitals with four points in three games against Montreal in 2016-17. Braden Holtby posted a 2-1-0 record against the Canadiens last season with a 1.69 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.
