South Carolina Stingrays Fall to Colorado Eagles 5-4 (OT), Eagles Lead Series 3-0

The Capitals’ ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, fell to the Colorado Eagles 5-4 in Game 3 of the Kelly Cup Finals on Sunday night. Colorado now leads the series 3-0 . Game 4 is set for Monday night in North Charleston.

The teams would alternate scoring goals throughout the entire game. The Rays struck first in the first period. The two teams would then trade goals for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime, tied 4-4. For the second time in the series, the Eagles tied the game in the final minute of regulation.

The Rays penalty kill was strong in the first period, killing 4 of 4 penalties. The Rays had 6 penalties in the game. Colorado had 5. South Carolina was 2-for-4 on the power play, while Colorado was 1-for-5, with their only man-advantage goal coming as the tying goal with 25 seconds left in regulation.

FIRST PERIOD:
The Stingrays would strike first in Game 3 with a power play goal by Kelly Zajac at the 7:06 mark of the opening frame. Rob Flick (10) and Andrew Cherniwchan (9) were credited with the assists.

The first goal of the Kelly Cup Finals scored in North Charleston was well received by the packed house.

The Eagles would tie the game on a goal by Julien Nante with 5:09 remaining in the first period. The goal came just as the Eagles’ second power play of the opening frame expired.

The first period would end with the game tied 1-1. Shots on goal were also tied 7-7 after one period of play. The penalties continued for the Rays in the first period, racking up 4 in the first 20 minutes of play. The Rays penalty kill was strong, killing all 4 penalties.

SECOND PERIOD:
The Rays would grab the lead back early in the second period on a goal by Andrew Cherniwchan at the 1:08 mark of the middle frame.  Rob Flick (11) and Steve Weinstein (6) were credited with the assists.

The Eagles tied the game with a goal by Sergei Boikov at the 12:09 mark of the middle frame.

The Rays would get it right back on a goal by Steven McParland with 4:18 left in the middle frame. The goal was unassisted.

The period would end with the Rays hanging on to the 3-2 lead. Shots on goal were 13-8 for the second period in favor of the Rays. The Rays led 20-15 in shots on goal thru two periods of play.

THIRD PERIOD:
Colorado tied the game with 9:51 left in regulation on a goal by Jake Marto.

The see-saw battle continued as the Rays would regain the lead late on a power play goal by Joe Devin with 3:41 left in regulation. Derek Arnold (5) and Steve Weinstein (7) were credited with the assists.

Colorado would tie the game on a goal by Matt Register with 24 seconds left in regulation.

And that’s the way regulation would end, with the teams tied 4-4. Shots on goal for the third period were 12-9 in favor of Colorado. The Stingrays led in shots on goal 29-27 thru three periods of play.

OVERTIME:
Colorado would win in overtime on a goal by Matt Garbowski with 13:56 left in the first overtime.
