Nicklas Backstrom notched his 10th career four assist game in his 10 year NHL career Saturday night versus the Lightning. Backstrom has once again quietly caught fire, and is a serious contender for the Art Ross Trophy.
Backstrom’s four assists marked the second time this week he has had three or more assists in a game. Backstrom has had three or more assists in a game four times this season, and 35 times in his career. In addition, Backstrom has the most four assist games overall since the 1996-1997 season.
Backstrom also continues his charge for a scoring title. As we noted last week, he is averaging nearly 15% less time on ice than Connor McDavid, who currently leads the chase for the Art Ross. Backstrom is currently just 5 points out of the lead.
Backstrom is just a single assist behind Connor McDavid’s total of 55 for the league lead in that department. Backstrom led the NHL with 60 assists in 2014-15.
