Shane Gersich‘s regular season drew to a close on Saturday night, as he and his University of North Dakota teammates completed a weekend sweep of St. Cloud State. UND is slated to open post season play this Friday vs. Denver.
The 2016-2017 season was a high water mark for Gersich, who showed tremendous growth over the last season. Gersich tallied 21 goals and added 16 assists in 37 games this season for a 1.00 points per game average. Gersich was named an All-NCHC Honorable Mention for the 2016-2017 season.
The 5′-11″ 18-year old Sophomore, from Chaska, Minnesota was a 5th round pick (134th overall) by the Capitals in the 2014 NHL entry draft. Gersich remains unsigned by the Capitals, and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2018.
Gersich’s highlight reel was impressive this season, but nothing more flashy than his “spin-o-rama” goal against Denver on November 11th.
“Last year I wasn’t in much of a position to be putting up big numbers,” Gersich said. “This year, I wanted to be more of an impact player and I have an opportunity and I’m trying to make the most of it.”
Added UND coach Brad Berry: “His ability to be a consistent player (is the area in which Gersich has grown the most). It all starts with him investing in his game. He comes to the rink every morning and works on his skills.” You can review Gersich’s game-by-game stats for the 2016-2017 season here.
Since REA opened, the only underclassmen to have more goals than Gersich’s 21: Parise, Toews, Oshie, Brock Nelson, Boeser, Duncan, Bochenski

The Capitals will be looking to sign Gersich before the end of this summer (2017), in order to avoid any potential dangers in losing the top prospect to free agency.
