Washington Capitals goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov stopped all 31 shots he faced for a 1-0 shutout over rival Traktor in KHL action on Friday night. The win raised Samsonov’s overall record to 15-3-5 for the season.
Samsonov, who began the season as Metallurg’s primary back-up netminder, has worked his way into becoming the team’s number one goaltender, as the team approaches post-season play. Samsonov is now 15-3-5 with a .936 save percentage and a 2.13 goals against average.

The win improved Mettalurg’s record to 36-5-6-13 (124 points) which is the best record in the KHL’s Eastern Conference.
Samsonov was the Capitals first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

The Caps will surly need a new backup goalie next year as Grubauer wil go in the expansion draft.
Unfortunately, I think you’re right. Grubauer is playing too well to be a backup for much longer.
