Hockey is back in the DMV. After a couple of days off for the bye week, the boys are back in town. The Capitals held practice Friday morning in front of a packed Kettler, before departing for Detroit to begin a three-game road trip. Two familiar faces rejoined the team from Hershey.

PRACTICE
Zach Sanford and Jakub Vrana have been recalled from Hershey. Andre Burakovksy, who injured his right hand last Thursday, was on the ice before practice began, doing a conditioning skate. The Capitals now have 13 healthy forwards with the recall. Trotz confirmed after practice that Sanford will play in Detroit.

NHL teams are 3-8-1 in the first game following a bye week so far. The Capitals already have a back-to-back game challenge facing them. After tomorrow’s 2:00 game at the Red Wings, they’ll go to New York to take on the Rangers in a 12:30 affair.

SHAVINGS

  • Braden Holtby sits one win shy of becoming the second goaltender in the NHL to earn 30 wins in each of the last three seasons and the second goalie in franchise history to record three career 30-win seasons. Olie Kolzig had five.
  • Zach Sanford registered 16 points (11 goals, five assists) in 25 games with Hershey this season.
  • Jakub Vrana has registered 25 points (13 goals, 12 assists) in 33 games with Hershey this season and is ranked fourth on the team in goals.

One of his favorite memories was being in the stands during the 2015 Winter Classic where Troy Brouwer scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds left.
