Don’t look now, but Brooks Orpik is leading a statistical category that may be surprising to many in Caps Nation.
Orpik is tops on the Caps in the “plus/minus” category, at a whopping +24. That’s good enough to be tied for 5th in the entire league.
[Plus/minus is a cumulative score of goals scored while a player is on the ice. A player receives a +1 for each goal scored by his team while the player is on the ice. The player receives a -1 for each goal scored by the opposition when the player is on the ice.]
Orpik has been a controversial player amongst Caps Nation, primarily due to his contract. Orpik is set to make $5.5 million per season through the 2018-2019 season. For a team up against the salary cap, the value and term have seemed exorbitant to many.
It should be noted that the “+/-” statistic is also a bit controversial in the hockey statistics community. The stat leans torwards defenseman, who get more ice time, and thus, more pluses and minus. The stat is also highly variable, with numerous factors that influence it, and more of them are outside of an individual player’s control than not.
