Since the moment he entered the NHL, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has proven he’s a special player. Building a career on scoring goals and piling up points, fans have seen him put his name in the record books. After earning his 1,000th career point, you can add his name to yet another list.
His 1,000th point came against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins in front of a raucous Verizon Center crowd. After his three-point game against the Montreal Canadiens two nights ago, Ovechkin needed just a single point to reach the 1K plateau.

In reaching 1,000 career points, Ovechkin becomes just the 84th player in the NHL’s 100 years of existence to do so. He also reached it in his 880th career game, becoming the second-fastest to do so; the fastest was ageless wonder and former Capital Jaromir Jagr. In his 11 NHL seasons, the 31-year old Russian has never missed more than 10 games in a season. He is also the 37th player in NHL history do so with one franchise.

Despite the decline that many players experience as they enter the wrong side of 30, The Great Eight has shown no signs of slowing down, and his durability means that his production could continue into his thirties. If he retired today, he would be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
NoVa Caps congratulates Alex on yet ANOTHER historical achievement!
