Just 35 seconds into his 880th NHL game, Alex Ovechkin scored his 20th goal of the 2016-17 season to notch his 1,000th career point. In this piece, NoVa Caps pays tribute to The Great Eight.
By reaching 1,000 points in 880 games, Ovechkin became the second-fastest player in NHL history (the fastest was Jaromir Jagr) to do so. He’s only the 37th player to record 1,000 points with one franchise and the 84th ever in the history of the league.
NoVa Caps’ Emma Vonn Hoene created this video to commemorate this monumental accomplishment:
Ovechkin has built his career around lighting the lamp and it’s only fitting that his 1,000th point come on a beauty of a goal. It’s also fitting that Ovechkin’s longtime running mate, Nicklas Backstrom, was credited with one of the assists on the goal.
