As many have heard, Adidas has won the latest contract for NHL hockey uniforms, with the official changeover taking place in time for next season. Changes that will occur as a result of the new vendor contract are starting to emerge, and some are not too encouraging.
Adidas is phasing out third jerseys, and some teams are going to have to decide whether to adopt their alternate jerseys as their primary ones.
According to Greg Wyshynski and The Minnesota Star-Tribune, “multiple sources tell the Star Tribune that all NHL teams will be permitted to have only home and road jerseys next season as Adidas takes over for Reebok as the official outfitter of NHL uniforms. There will be no third jerseys, in order to make the initial implementation of new sweaters easier.”
Reading “between the lines”, one immediate question remains unanswered. Once the switchover is complete, will Adidas allow teams to add alternate jerseys? One would assume so, as the additional jerseys equate to a ton of revenue for the NHL, teams and jersey manufacturers.

It’s probably just a matter of time until the third jerseys return. There’s too much money there.
So far the most alarming part of the Adidas transition is the fact that the “Premier” level jerseys will have their own manufacturer, which doesn’t bode well for those of us who don’t have to drop $300 for a good looking jersey.
I agree. This almost feels like a publicity stunt, as it makes very little sense for Adidas to do this. Will this cause a rush on current jerseys in stores?
