Paul Carey scored a goal late in the second period and extended his scoring streak to an incredible AHL-best 19 games as the Hershey Bears earned a 5-2 victory over one of their in-state rivals in their first game back from the holiday break in Lehigh Valley.
Colin McDonald got Lehigh Valley on the board late in the first period while the Phantoms were on a power play when Ryan Bourque was in the penalty box for hooking.
But brother Chris tied the game just 4:22 into the second period with Chandler Stephenson and Garrett Mitchell recording assists. That goal was Chris Bourque’s 499th point with Hershey. He recorded his 600th career point before the holiday break.
Less than a minute later, Travis Boyd continued his impressive second season in Hershey, netting his 10th goal of the season on the power play. Christian Djoos and Liam O’Brien notched assists.
Carey’s goal came late in the second period. Stephenson recorded his second point of the night with the secondary assist. The primary went to Aaron Ness.
But the Phantoms would rally to within a goal just 23 seconds later when Andy Miele made it 3-2 Hershey heading into the final period.
Christian Thomas added an insurance goal in the third with his 13th of the season. Ryan Bourque and Zach Sill assisted.
Thomas later returned the favor as he assisted on Sill’s sixth goal of the season that made it 5-2 Hershey late in the third period.
Vitek Vanecek got the nod in goal. He stopped 23 of 25 shots. Hershey’s power play was 1 for 4 on the night. The penalty kill was 4 for 5.
Hershey scratched Dustin Gazley (lower body), Riley Barber (upper body), and Joey Leach (upper body). Madison Bowey was also a scratch. According to a tweet from Zach Fisch, Bowey had travel issues, but will join the team to travel to Syracuse tonight.

Hershey is in Syracuse Wednesday night. The Bears then return to Giant Center to host Bridgeport Friday at 7:00 and Providence Saturday at 5:00.
