After a scoreless first period between Team Sweden and Team Europe, Washington Capitals centerman Nicklas Backstrom would grab the lead for Team Sweden at 2:31 of the second period.
Backstrom would first win the faceoff, then manuever into position to knock one home and give Team Sweden the 1-0 lead.

The goal was challenged by Team Europe on the basis of goalie interference. The subsequent review upheld Backstrom’s goal.
Backstrom’s goal was followed by a Team Europe goal (Marian Gaborik) at 16:27, with the second period ending tied 1-1. The winner will face Team Canada in a best of three series starting next week.
