CSKA Moscow Now Targeting Orlov After Signing Valeri Nichuskin

Earlier today, the Dallas Stars lost promising young forward Valeri Nichuskin to KHL team CSKA Moscow on a two-year deal. An unsigned restricted free agent (RFA), CSKA seemed intent on bringing the Russian back home. It now appears they’re targeting Capitals RFA defenseman Dmitry Orlov.

The reason Caps fans should take notice is both Nichuskin and Orlov share the same agent, Mark Gandler. A report out of Russia seems to indicate that CSKA Moscow now want yet another Gandler client.

While Orlov has reiterated time and again that his goal is to stay in the NHL, the longer no deal gets done between the Caps and Orlov, the more likely it is Orlov leans toward signing with CSKA Moscow, who hold negotiating rights with him. While both Orlov and the Capitals continue to insist they want a deal done, if CSKA Moscow truly wants Orlov, there’s nothing the Caps can do to prevent Orlov from signing if the offer is more than what they’re willing to match.
