The Washington Capitals fell to the Florida Panthers 5-2 on Sunday night in Coral Gables, Florida. This was the second of three games for both teams in the 2016 Rookie Tournament. Vitek Vanecek got the start in goal for the Capitals.
The teams will have Monday off and wrap up the tournament on Tuesday. The Capitals finish with a tilt against the Nashville Predators prospects at 10:00 AM on Tuesday.

Travis Boyd would score the game’s first goal at the four minute mark, his second tally of the tournament, but the Panthers would tie the game on the very next shift, going 5-hole on Vanecek.
The Panthers would grab their first lead of the game on a goal by Denis Malgin, with 8:03 left in the period.
That would be all of the scoring in the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
Zach Sanford would tie the game for the Capitals on a short-handed goal with 13:11 left in the middle frame. This was Sanford’s third goal in five periods of play.
That would be all of the scoring for the period, as the teams headed to the locker room tied 2-2 after two periods of play. Jakub Vrana would get in a fight as the period came to an end. Madison Bowey would also mix it up just before heading to the locker room.
THIRD PERIOD
The Panthers struck quickly in the third period with another goal by Denis Malgin, giving Florida a 3-2 lead just one minute into the final frame. The Panthers would add another tally by Denis Malgin with 13:15 left in the game, to stretch their lead to 4-2. This was Malgin’s third goal of the game.
The Capitals would increase their offensive zone pressure following the fourth goal by the Panthers, and generated a number of scoring chances, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. The Capitals pulled Vanacek with 3:25 left in the period, but were unable to manufacture any quality scoring chances. Florida would add an empty netter with a minute to play to secure the 5-2 victory.
