Debuted in Columbus this past All-Star game, the NHL in cooperation with the NHLPA and SAP will once again be implementing the new state-of-the-art technologies for this years World Cup of Hockey.
The NHL Department of Public Relations announced this morning that SAP will be the official sponsor of the World Cup of Hockey home and away jerseys.
Hasso Plattner, owner of the San Jose Sharks, is also a co-founder of SAP. In addition to having logos added to each and every jersey, the company will also partner with the NHL and NHLPA to provide “player and puck-tracking technology” for the World Cup.
Each player jersey and game-used puck will include GPS data tags. This technology was first debuted publicly at last years All-Star game.
This technology represents the next-generation in hockey data, as the chips will provide real-time speed, location and direction data for both the players and the puck in play. The GPS tags are also capable of tracking and quantifying other aspects of the game such as true possession time, exact shot locations and position of all other players on the ice for each shot, trajectory of shots, etc. The list goes on and truly represents a tremendous leap in hockey analytic capabilities.
